Getting To Know Leo Activities
"Knowing is not enough; we must apply.
Being willing is not enough; we must do."
-Leonardo da Vinci
Visit these sites and try the activities. Record observations on your "Getting To Know Leo" Worksheet.
A. Wacky Writing! Did you know that Leonardo typically wrote backwards? Take a look at Mirror Writing to see it up close and try out Leonardo's style. Why do you think da Vinci wrote this way? Practice writing like Leonardo on the worksheet. Tip: if you put a pencil in both hands and write with both hands at the same time, writing backwards will be much easier!
B. Turning the Pages Visit the British Library to see an original manuscript by Leonardo himself. You will be able to read the book and zoom in on the drawings. Jot down what you saw and your thoughts on it.
C. Leonardo's Job Resume Click here to read Leonardo's Job Resume. What do you think about Leonardo's opinion of his own skills?
D. Theft of the Mona Lisa Would it surprise you to learn that Leonardo da Vinci's most famous masterpiece, the Mona Lisa, was once stolen? Read about the crime that shook the art world at Treasures of the World. Use the little Mona heads on the right of the article to find out more and answer the questions on your worksheet.
When you finish these activities, you'll be ready to “Discover” (that's a hint!) how you did on the Pre-Unit Survey.*
